Lust for votes can lead any contestant to chant stutters to any extent like a lunatic. What Mulayam Singh Yadava, Samajvadi Party Chief and ex Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, uttered the other day at Moradabad(U.P., India) is a glaring example of it. He defended rapists by saying -

“Ladkon se aisee ghaltiyan ho jaatee hain to iska ye matlab nahin ki unhein phansi de di jaye”. (Boys do commit such mistakes but that doesn’t mean that they should be hanged).
He also criticised the death penalty awarded by the Court to the rape accused Vijai Jadhav, Mohammad Qasim Sheikh and Saleem Ansari in Mumbai Mill gangrape case making the statement that -

“Ladka Ladki dost hote hain, matbhed honey par ladki balatkar ka muqadma kara deti hai aur baad mein ladkey ko phansi kee saza ho jaatee hai. hum iske khilaaf hain aur sarkar mein aayenge to aise qanoon ki sameeksha kareingey” (Initially the boy and the girl are friends and when there is some difference of opinion between them, the girl gets a case filed against him and he is hanged. We are opposed to it and if voted to power we shall change the law).
If he has not fallen short of his memory he must be remembering that during the time Mayawati was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh he was on the fore front criticising rape incidents in the State and now with the general elections running in full swing he forgets what he said earlier and is harping on the tunes that may elicit him necessary votes. Those who defend the perpetrators of rape should in fact themselves be treated as such by the Law and punished accordingly –be it a Mulayam Singh Yadava or any body else, a big bully or some Tom, Dick or Harry. When Law fails to take up and address most vulnerable an issue like that of a rape for any reason whatsoever, nothing but a rebellion erupts.
